Transforming a Vacant Computing Center into an eSports Arena

MH Professional Engineering is currently converting a vacant 2,500-square-foot computing center into an eSports Arena at The State University of New York (SUNY) at Albany.

Never heard of eSports? The term, which stands for electronic sports, refers to competitive video gaming where individuals or teams compete in various games, often in front of live audiences and online viewers. These events can range from small, local tournaments to large international championships, drawing millions of viewers and participants worldwide. The growing popularity of eSports has led to the creation of dedicated arenas designed to enhance the gaming and viewing experience.

Our HVAC design for the eSports Arena includes several important aspects:

  • Modular Air Handling Unit (AHU): We are installing a modular AHU with energy recovery in the existing basement, which has limited access. This requires precise planning to ensure proper ventilation and exhaust paths around existing spaces. The exhaust path includes direct buried ductwork to a new exterior areaway due to existing constraints.

  • Heating and Cooling: Heating is provided through a new, dedicated heat exchanger connected to the campus-wide high-temperature hot water system, with plans for future integration with a low-temperature system. Cooling for the main AHU and IT/AV Computer Room Air Handling Units (CRAHs) is supplied through new taps on the existing campus year-round chilled water system.

  • HVAC Controls: We are coordinating new HVAC controls with the existing building management system provider to ensure seamless integration and efficient operation.

MH Professional Engineering is also coordinating the fire protection design for the space since it does not possess sprinkler coverage. The design includes replacing and upsizing an existing zone control assembly to adequately cover the current spaces, eSports Arena, and future expansion into adjacent spaces. We are also coordinating the routing of piping above existing ceilings in occupied offices and main corridors.

We are excited to support the growing eSports industry by creating this space on the SUNY Albany campus.
